2008 Ugly Kitchen Contest Winner Announced!

The Slack Family of Traverse City Receives $35,000 Kitchen Makeover

Traverse City, MI, March 28, 2008 – After assessing more than 700 entries from four counties, Rick and Amy Slack were announced as the lucky recipients of a $35,000 custom kitchen makeover courtesy of the First Annual Ugly Kitchen Contest.

The Slack family will receive new cabinets, countertops, flooring, lighting, appliances, as well as luxury amenities that define the perfect kitchen. Top area suppliers and businesses will provide all products and services for the project.

The First Annual Ugly Kitchen Contest kicked off January 11, 2008. The contest, presented by The Inman Company, a local residential and commercial interior design firm, aimed at improving the kitchen and family area most in need.

"Being an organizer of this contest is a direct reflection of my belief that you get back in life what you give," said Shane Inman, presenting sponsor.

The Slack home has been in the family since the 1930's. In 1993 Rick and Amy purchased the home from their Aunt. They started remodeling some of the rooms, but with the arrival of their first child, priorities of where to spend their time and dollars changed. The focus was directed at raising their family, which meant that Amy would be a stay-at-home mom. They admit that this was a sacrifice and thought many times about how much a functional kitchen with more modern appliances and plumbing would be a dream.

"We're excited, overwhelmed and grateful – and that's an understatement," Amy Slack said.

"We've been excited from the beginning to be a partner in the Ugly Kitchen Contest," said TV 7&4 Vice President and General Manager Jill Saarela.  "We look forward to showcasing the partners' work with the winner's kitchen makeover on TV 7&4." Tune into TV 7&4 or visit UglyKitchenContest.com to follow the project's progress.

The area's premier project sponsors include the presenting sponsors, The Inman Company, Little Fish Woodworks and 7&4 News. Additional sponsors include: Floor Covering Brokers, Max's Service, Traverse Tops, Aspen Enterprises, Dan Brady Painting & Wood Restoration, MAC Custom Homes, Michigan Home Resource Guide, Precision Plumbing & Heating Systems, A Better Sound, Golden-Fowler Home Furnishings, Larkin Insurance Group, Peppercorn, Lighting Center, Fischer Design Floral Studio, Holiday Inn West Bay and Cookie McCullough, Real Estate Agent.
